I've looked back at my previous post about my writing goals for this year and realized that the main one is pretty much defunct at this point. It was:
1. Complete the first draft of A Killer Pinot Noir.
Since I've shelved that book for now, I don't see much point in having that as a goal, do you? So, here's my revised writing goal for 2009:
1. Complete the first draft of a novel.
That's it. One goal. No details -- they'll come later. Just finish a book. Any book, any genre. I've got a whole year to do it in. Now that I've written over 14,000 words in 14 days, I know I can meet this goal in a year.
In fact, I'm so excited to be on a writing binge that I've decided to take my laptop with me when we leave for vacation in a couple of weeks. We're going to be gone for nearly three weeks and I just don't want to lose that feeling of momentum. I know that I should be able to write longhand, but it just isn't the same for me. I'm a computer gal--my brain works differently, in a creative sense, when I use the computer to write versus writing on paper. Anyone else notice a difference like that?

Have fun on your trip, and yes, don't lose the momentum it's so hard to get it back once it leaves.
Setting realistic goals is vital. Even better, make sure they're something you can accomplish daily/weekly/monthy, and are measurable. "Finish a novel" is a lofty goal. Writing X pages/words/ a day/week is something you can measure, and you can take pride in accomplishing these little steps.
Good luck!
I think that's a great idea. I can't write longhand, either. But you may find yourself completely inspired to write on your trip.
I hope you have a GREAT time!!!
Thanks Paty!
My plan is to take the time to write an hour a day while I'm gone. For me, it's keeping the habit alive that counts for the next few weeks. :-)
Hi Terry! Thanks for the advice. You're right, those daily goals are important and that's really what I meant about keeping the momentum going. The "finish the novel" goal is the overall target for the year, but it's that daily writing goal that's going to get me there.
Thanks Elisabeth. I can't wait for the trip (not that I'm counting the days or anything!). :-)
I'm hoping that New Zealand will be as inspiring in person as it is on film. Who knows? Maybe I'll end up setting a story there.
